The main objective of this research is to determine the critical factors of the predictive maintenance process that do not allow to notice the failures of hydraulic shovel components from a company that provides maintenance service. For this purpose, the root cause analysis process was performed on 15 reports of component failures, through the application of tools for continuous improvement (Ishikawa diagram) It concluded that, a lack of strategy of the predictive program, the non-application of technological tools with their intervals for the measurement of the condition, the lack of both, levels warning alarms and work procedures for predictive tasks, noncompliance with scheduled predictive assignments and the lack of a staff training program, are the critical factors of the process under study. Likewise, through the document analysis and the use of checklists, the search of the documentation of the predictive area from the integrated management system, planning, and the training area, was carried out to determine the implementation level of the critical factors mentioned. Finally, a proposal for improvement (to be executed by the staff from the area) is recommended. It will allow the staff to have administrative and technological tools, knowledge and skills, in order to perform correctly their job functions and so, to detect and warn the faults in the hydraulic shovels, to achieve a greater availability of the machinery and therefore the fulfillment of its contract.
