The present investigation had as a general objective to determine the relationship that exists between self-esteem and dependence in young people from a youth center in Lima. The focus of the study was quantitative, of a non-experimental cross-sectional design and with a correlational descriptive level and the population consisted of 425 young people, establishing a representative sample made up of 202 young people, intentional not probabilistic sampling. For data collection, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale and the emotional dependency questionnaire were used. The results determined that in the levels of self-esteem, 54.5% have high self-esteem and 10.9% have low self-esteem. In the levels of emotional dependence, 53% present a medium level, 30% a low level and 17% present a high level; that there is a negative, moderate correlation between self-esteem with separation anxiety (-0.419), low negative correlation with modification of plans (-0.333), moderate negative correlation with fear of loneliness (-0.427), low negative correlation with borderline expression (- 0.345) and low negative correlation with attention seeking (-0.252). At a general level, there is a negative, moderate correlation between self-esteem and emotional dependence (-0.416, p<0.001). Finally, it is concluded that the lower the self-esteem, the greater the emotional dependence.
