The reverse osmosis plant generates as part of its process waste water with a high content of salts, commonly this stream is called reject or concentrate; in most cases these are discharged into the sewer network. Electrocoagulation is a technique that has been investigated to treat industrial, domestic and urban wastewater. This process is equipped with a power source and several electrodes whose purpose is to provide destabilizing ions of colloidal particles that replace the functions of a coagulant as a conventional treatment. The present research aims to evaluate the parameters of the operating variables of an electrocoagulation equipment with respect to the reduction of the total hardness from the Reverse Osmosis wastewater. For its evaluation, an electrocoagulation equipment was built with parallelepipedic magnesium and stainless steel electrodes in a zigzag shape and the operating variables such as: electric potential, volumetric flow and treated volume of waste water were evaluated. In this investigation, the variables flow of 100 mL / s were considered. and 150 mL / s., electric potential of 4V and 7.4 V and Volume of 1000 mL and 3000 mL. The most suitable parameters obtained according to the operation variables were the following: flow (150 mL / s.), Electric potential (7.4 V) and volume (3000mL); where a greater removal of the total hardness was obtained, reaching a reduction percentage of 24.61%; where the average total hardness was reduced from 534.355 (mgCaCo3) to 427.70 (mgCaCo3), whose value is below the Maximum Allowable Limits (LMP) established in the S.D. N ° 031-2010 SA.
