ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to determine the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Social Perceived Support in a sample of 291 older adults from a Senior Center in Trujillo. This instrument evaluates the perception of support from two sources: family - significant others and friends. Regarding the reported findings, the construct validity was found by the corrected item - test analysis, in which values ranging from .63 to .77 were obtained for the total scale; in relation to the “Family - Other Significant“ and “Friends“ áreas, values were reached from .73 to .85; and .85 to .90 respectively. As for the reliability by internal consistency, a Cronbach's Alpha of .92 is obtained for the total scale; and for “Family - Other Significant“ and “Friends“ áreas, a Cronbach Alpha of .91 and .90 were reached, respectively. On the other hand, it was determined to develop general percentile norms by gender and age. There wasn‟t differences in scores from those two groups. Thus, it is stated that the scale presents suitable psychometric characteristics for the population studied. KEYWORDS: Perceived social support, older adult, reliability, validity.
