ABSTRACT The objective of this research is to determine the relationship between parental stress and tertiary, secondary and primary coping strategies in parents with children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The parental stress questionnaire (PSI-SF) of Abidin and the inventory of coping strategies (CSI) of Cano, Rodríguez and García were used. A non-probabilistic sampling of intentional type was made up of 102 parents who had at least one child between 6 and 16 years old diagnosed with ADHD. The results indicate that there is an inverse correlation between parental stress and maladaptive coping (r = -0.272; p = 0.006). It was also found that 85% of the parents presented significant parental stress and only 15% of non-significant stress. On the other hand, there was an inverse correlation between parental stress and primary coping strategies; (R = -0.274, p = 0.005), followed by emotional expression (r = -0.309, p = 0.002), then desiderative thinking (r = -0.274, p = 0.005) and lastly Social withdrawal (r = -0.209, p = 0.035). The research concludes that most parents have a significant level of stress and that to the larger maladaptive coping strategies employed, parents experience lower levels of stress.
