ABSTRACT The thesis studies the influence of ground glass on the strength of concrete pavers. NTP standard 399 604 “UNIT MASONRY used. Methods of sampling and testing of concrete masonry units “and NTP 399 611“ UNIT MASONRY. Concrete pavers paving. Requirements“. The glass is used for partial replacement of traditional thick concrete aggregate. The mixture used in making pavers are designed based on method ACI, the weight proportions of the mixture includes five, ten, fifteen, twenty and fifty percent glass. The main motivation of this thesis is to compare the resistance of concrete pavers and pavers with recycled glass; the thesis starts with the theoretical description, classification and properties of glass and pavers, and then describe the tests to which the pavers be submitted, to verify compliance with NTP 399 604 (pavers) standard. The definition of materials and equipment, procedures and calculations testing compressive strength, absorption and observation visual aspects of handcrafted paving is also described. Additionally materials and equipment, and procedures and calculations sieve analysis tests, moisture content, specific gravity, unit weight and absorption of coarse and fine aggregates extracted from the quarry Chavez, located in the river Mashcon detailed. In this work the mix design for each percentage of glass and according to the nominal maximum aggregate size was performed, making the pavers in the laboratory of the Universidad Privada del Norte is detailed. When testing compliance with the minimum compressive strength, absorption and visual aspects (size, weight, texture and color) by replacing the coarse aggregate for different percentages of ground glass in the weights used in the mixtures was verified. Finally it was concluded that the addition of 50% recycled glass to mix the 4.09% increases the strength of cobblestones.
