ABSTRACT The Central Valley Growers Santa Catalina (CEPROVASC) is a cooperative dedicated to the production of fruits and vegetables, currently supplying organic avocado Hass and Fuerte Fairtrasa, exporter of organic avocado market of the European Union, which markets since 2010. This experience working with Fairtrasa and with the support of the NGO North Cedepas for four years, has strengthened the organization and initiated the interest on the board to export directly and stop being suppliers; in order to increase their profit margins and consolidated as the first cooperative in organic avocado market to foreign markets. This research aims to determine the functional strategies to develop the export potential of the CEPROVASC cooperative to market organic avocado in Barcelona, Spain. To achieve this, first we chose to identify functional strategies implemented during his tenure, for which a questionnaire was applied to the president of the Cooperative; then, the most optimal and less risky market was selected to start the first exporting experience; which tools for national and international business intelligence and application of CEPAL methodology used; consecutively, the export potential is evaluated through the application of an interview, in order to know the weaknesses and strengths of the organization, allowing a quick overview of how it has been managing the organization and have knowledge of resources are there and those that are essential to carry out the operational processes of production and export; Finally, strategies are proposed in each functional area, they were designed based on the fulfillment of these objectives; which will allow the company to know how to use and apply the resources of the functional areas, to maximize productivity and support the competitive advantages, in order to achieve the objectives of the company. The result of the research shows that the Cooperative currently lacks the necessary conditions for the export market directly to Barcelona. This conclusion is supported by the results of each of the specific objectives. The first showed that functional strategies implemented by the Cooperative have enabled the organization to sustain as providers, but are not the most appropriate nor sufficient to enter the foreign market. The second, identified as an objective to Spain market; for this, we took into account not only existing trade links with Peru, leading provider of avocado to the target market; but also that, even though Spain is a consolidated Peruvian avocado exports market, the Cooperative to be Fairtrasa provider has a product tailored to the requirements of the European Union; also handling the same official language facilitates negotiations with prospective clients. The third objective showed that CEPROVASC not have export potential to sell in foreign markets; despite having sufficient production capacity to export, the ability to expand production by 50% and have good liquidity ratio; clear deficiencies are evident in the internal management of the organization both by not having an organization that includes areas necessary for proper management; and the lack of indispensable for the operation which requires export process human and physical resources. Finally, functional strategies in the areas of Marketing, Human Resources, Operations and Finance were raised; each strategy was designed based on the results of the assessment of export potential and identified strategies that have been implemented by the Cooperative; to strengthen the weaknesses of the organization and incorporate the resources required for both the production process as they are required for export. The company is in a position to carry out the process of direct export if you take the decision to implement functional strategies proposed in this investigation to enable them to market in the Spanish market. Therefore, the organization is recommended internal reinforcements, which require first action organizational restructuring and incorporation of the functional areas needed for agricultural export; because, once they are defined, define the roles and hierarchies of personnel working in the organization, allowing them to achieve organizational objectives with greater efficiency through specialization and resource optimization. We also suggest both employers and academics to develop research on strategic management of the functional areas of particular form; and create tools to evaluate the export potential, which play an important for proper diagnosis of the situational reality role, allowing the employer to know what your weaknesses to enter the foreign market and to take action on them.
