The objective of this research was to analyze the relation between beauty stereotypes and self-esteem in nutrition students in Lima Metropolitana. In this paper, an associative strategy with a simple correlation design is presented. The sample consisted of 161 women whose ages ranged from 18 to 25 years, with the 18-19 age range being the most predominant (44.1%). The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4 (SATAQ-4) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE) were used to measure the variables. The results of the study show that there is a significant and negative relation between self-esteem and the dimensions of beauty stereotypes, such as the internalization of the thinness ideal (rho = -.61; p < .001), internalization of the athletic ideal ( rho = -.37; p < .001), parental pressure (rho = -.51; p < .001), peer pressure (rho = -.39; p < .001) and media pressure (rho = -.39; p < .001). It is concluded that there is a significant and inverse correlation between the variables studied. Furthermore, interaction with family, peers and the media encourage the internalization of the thin ideal, which in turn negatively affects self-esteem and increases the likelihood of developing psychological disorders.
