The present work was part of a founded project by PROCIENCIA, whose main objective was to automate the rehabilitation of the legs of infants up to six months of age with myelomeningocele. The rehabilitation of the affected babies consists of performing smooth flexion/extension movements on the leg by a physical therapy specialist. In addition, with a medical specialist, the following specifications were established: three seconds of flexion, five of extension and five of rest between each knee movement. For this purpose, a flexible vacuum actuator was used as part of a rehabilitation system. The controller faced two main challenges: anthropometric variations and the lack of a mathematical model. The first relates to the need for the controller to be able to operate within a range of weights and lengths that resemble those of a newborn up to six months of age. On the other hand, the second challenge lies in the absence of a mathematical model, which considerably limits the controller options available for implementation. Taking these challenges into account, the use of a fuzzy controller was proposed. The results of the implementation showed that the fuzzy controller is able to meet the motion requirements within the range of zero to six months without the need to adjust its internal parameters for each month. A PID controller was also implemented for comparison, however, it was shown to be very sensitive to anthropometric variations between months, making it difficult (in some cases) to obtain adequate gains to meet the proposed requirements.
