Population and industrial growth cause an increase in water use and impacts on surface water bodies, since they are the main sources of water and receivers of wastewater discharges. This scenario occurs in the study area, part of the population that lives near the Chillón River watershed consumes water directly for their basic activities, irrigation of their agricultural crops, as well as for industrial activities, so it is important to highlight that they also discharge their effluents directly into the river. Although it is true that water quality monitoring, carried out by ANA, allows us to know the concentration of different pollutants at a given point, however, it is not entirely appropriate due to the particular characteristics and variables throughout the basin. For the reasons stated above and in accordance with the characteristics of the Chillón River, it was necessary to select and develop the QUAL2Kw model to evaluate the water quality of its natural channel and under different basin scenarios, simulating the interaction of degradation and transport of the components discharged into the water body during the dry season and flood season. The use of specialized software and data on field parameters of water flow at points of interest allowed the establishment of a baseline for water quality modeling in the Chillón River basin, identifying critical sections of the basin. This information will allow institutions responsible for water management to take preventive actions in the management of the basin.
