The objective of this research was to develop a new population of mutants of the “Centenario” variety of kiwicha (Amaranthus caudatus) to continue improving its sustainable production under Peruvian conditions. It began with irradiation of dry seeds with doses of 400 Gy and 600 Gy of gamma radiation and the plants from this material were evaluated following an established protocol for three generations (M1, M2 and M3) under La Molina conditions. In the M1 generation it was determined that the mean lethal dose for germination was 404.9 Gy and the mean lethal dose for survival was 535 Gy and a reduction in germination, survival, shoot length, root length and sterility in the plants was observed, being significantly more marked with the increase in the irradiation dose. In the M2 generation, chlorophyll mutations and morphological and quality mutations were observed at both doses evaluated (400 Gy and 600 Gy) with a higher frequency at the highest dose. In the M3 generation, only the population derived from the 400 Gy treatment was evaluated and leaf, stem and inflorescence mutations were identified, selecting plants with different traits to the parental material. Within the selected material, four mutants stand out due to changes markedly different from the parental material in several traits and which are mentioned below: Mutant MKCENT-31 presented: lanceolate leaf, branched stem, stem with pubescence and compact inflorescence. Mutant MKCENT-66 presented branched stem, green/pink inflorescence and decumbent position. Mutant MKCENT-82 presented differences such as leaves with pigmentation, pink stem, purple striations on the stem and loosely dense, pink and decumbent panicle. The MKCENT-84 mutant presented leaf pigmentation, purple stem striations and an intermediate panicle of pink color, with loose and decumbent density.
