Abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) negatively impacts marine ecosystems, altering the natural state of our seas. These impacts include the bycatch of threatened and endangered species, physical damage to benthic environments, the introduction of synthetic materials into the diets of marine fauna, navigation hazards, and economic and social costs. The FAO and UNEP have identified gillnets, lines, and traps as the most polluting types of fishing gear. These gears predominantly occur in northern Peru, particularly in the regions of Tumbes and Piura. This study preliminarily quantified the ALDFG found in demersal trawling zones located in Tumbes and Piura during the period from October 2020 to March 2021. Specific actions were also undertaken to describe and classify the debris. Data collection involved measuring the quantity of ALDFG found in the fishing area, divided into three sectors: A, B, and C, and determining that there were no significant differences between the sectors. A total of 220.4 kg of ALDFG was collected, with eel traps being the most prevalent (110.4 kg), followed by gillnets (71 kg), lines (36.6 kg), and jigging gear (2.4 kg), representing 50.1%, 32.2%, 16.6%, and 1.1% of the total, respectively. Additionally, information was supplemented with surveys conducted with artisanal fishers, providing data on the loss, abandonment, or discard of their fishing gear. The surveys confirmed a relationship between the types of fishing gear and the impacts and causes of their loss, with the primary cause being bad weather and the most significant impact being ghost fishing of target species.
