This study focuses on obtaining a high-quality filter material for a tailings dam located at 4127.40 meters above sea level in Cusco, Chumbivilcas. The main objective is to select and validate a material that meets the required technical specifications for the safe construction and operation of the dam. Granulometry, liquid limit, plastic limit, plasticity index, and moisture content tests were conducted on the produced filter material. These tests are crucial to characterize soil properties and determine its behavior under loads and moisture conditions. The results demonstrated that the material complies with international technical standards, exhibiting adequate plasticity to ensure the stability of the tailings dam. It is concluded that the selected material is suitable for use in the construction of dams under similar conditions. Constant monitoring of the material during dam operation is recommended, along with further studies to optimize the design and use of filter materials in other tailings structures. This study significantly contributes to the fields of civil and environmental engineering by providing a solid and well-founded basis for the selection of filter materials in tailings dams, ensuring the safety and sustainability of these critical infrastructures.
