Television, as a mass media par excellence, has the ability to raise awareness about public problems such as suicide. However, the characteristics of the informative treatment of this event suggest the need to delve into the quality of what is shown on the screen. To this end, the research analyzes the treatment of television news on suicide in local channels from four dimensions associated with quality: the construction of information, information sources, audiovisual resources and content treatment. To this end, thirty television news items available on the website of three Peruvian news programs: América Noticias, Latina and ATV Noticias, were examined through the content analysis technique. The study carried out shows that the television media have an important role to play in being able to be a fundamental resource in being able to have a forecast regarding suicide, improving the type of sensationalist and sensitive information they disseminate and being able to transmit the news with information that helps the viewer. In this way, this research seeks to help communication professionals to improve the audiovisual and informative content of Peruvian news about suicide to be not only an informative means for society but also a support for the audience regarding this social problem.
