This paper analyzes the effect of Central Bank reference rate shocks on inflation expectations in Peru for the period 2004 to 2019. For this purpose, an extensive review of bibliographic sources on monetary policy in Peru, its transmission channels, and the role of expectations in Central Bank decisions was conducted. The expectations channel of monetary policy transmission was analyzed, along with which variables influence inflation expectations to incorporate them into the econometric model. Using a BVAR methodology with a normal-diffuse prior and quarterly data, it is shown that in response to a shock of one standard deviation magnitude, the interbank interest rate generates a decrease of -0.036 bp for 12-month inflation expectations in the fourth quarter, reaching its lowest point, and maintains its significance up to the ninth quarter. The effect dissipates after 12 quarters, indicating that the shocks are transitory rather than permanent, thus reinforcing the effectiveness of the Central Bank's work during the analysis period. Regarding long-term expectations, the result is not significant, which reinforces the idea of monetary policy neutrality in the long run.
