In compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulation, mining companies must ensure compliance with the environmental and social commitments associated with their exploration projects and mines, which arise from auditable sources (environmental regulation, environmental management instruments, mandates and provisions from audit authorities and enabling titles) and non-auditable sources (Corporate Social Responsibility, agreements derived from social conflicts resolutions and contracts). Currently, there is a range of situations, during the identification and execution of environmental and social commitments, that make it difficult for mining companies to fully comply with all their commitments, such as the wide extension of environmental management instruments, the existence of very broad, generic and/or hardly measurable commitments, deficiencies in the evidence record keeping, among others. In light of these problems, a protocol has been developed to improve the management of environmental and social commitments, which consisted of three phases: (i) methodology for the identification of commitments, which includes listing the sources of commitments, recording general data in matrixes, systematizing commitments and recording complementary data, (ii) methodology for the prioritization of commitments, which consists of a six criteria assessment, value recording and sorting according to a prioritization scale, and (iii) methodology for compliance monitoring and verification, which includes establishing a system for evidence record keeping, establishing verification frequencies, establishing deadlines, establishing means of verification, carrying out verification, preparing action plans, establishing indicators to measure compliance and identifying opportunities for improvement. Additionally, two matrixes were developed as support tools.
