In this study, the stabilization process of metallic mercury in a ball mill using sulfur to obtain mercury sulfide was developed. To achieve such process, variable reaction times (30, 60 and 90 min) and stoichiometric ratios of Hg:S (1,00 : 1,00; 1,00 : 1,25 and 1,00: 1,50) were tested. It was not possible to stabilize mercury with a reaction time of 30 minutes. Afterwards, in order to evaluate the efficiency of the treatments, three tests were carried out on the obtained mercury sulfide, including the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), ecotoxicity on Daphnia magna and Lactuca Sativa individuals, and X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD). TCLP tests were performed using EPA method 1311 as reference, obtaining values ranging from <0,003 (quantification limit) to 3,102 mg/L. Bioassays were carried out using EPA protocol 600/3-88/029. Lethal Concentration 50 (CL50) values for Daphnia magna ranged between 1,159-3,242% and 0,360-2,425% for 24 and 48 hours, respectively. Half maximal Inhibitory Concentration (IC50) values for Lactuca sativa ranged between 17,9-100% for the radicle and 100% for the hypocotyl. Likewise, the average toxicity of the samples in the range of 21,3 – 50,1 TU, classifying all the samples as highly toxic. Finally, XRD analyses revealed that the product structure contained mercury sulfide (in the form of cinnabar and metacinnabar) with percentages ranging from 31.2% to 95.5%. Based on the efficiency analyses, it is concluded that the most suitable treatment corresponds to a stoichiometric ratio Hg:S of 1,00:1,25 during a reaction time of 60 minutes.
