Objective: To explore and analyze the knowledge, opinions and perceptions about the relationship between periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome in endocrinologists and dentists from hospitals in the cities of Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote 2017. Methodology: An exploratory qualitative approach study was carried out. In-depth interviews were applied to 3 endocrinologists and 9 dentists from 3 hospitals in the cities of Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote. The interviews were audio recorded and then they were transcribed for coding and subsequent analysis of contents in the ATLAS ti software 7.5. Version. Results: All respondents were aware of the relationship between periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome; however, endocrinologists were not aware of the benefits of periodontal treatment of patients with metabolic syndrome. All the interviewed professionals agreed on the inclusion of the dental approach as part of the medical consultation of the patient with metabolic syndrome. Both, endocrinologists and dentists, consider that the main barriers for interprofessional medical-dental collaboration in the treatment of the metabolic syndrome patient are: lack of staff, limited time for consultation and lack of knowledge. Conclusions: The interviewed professionals were aware of the relationship between periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome and agreed on the inclusion of the interprofessional medical-dental approach of the patient with metabolic syndrome. However, those evaluated reported barriers for interprofessional collaboration in the management of these patients. Therefore, it is necessary to design and implement strategies to overcome the barriers identified in the present study for the benefit of patients with metabolic syndrome or other systemic conditions.
