The purpose of the present investigation has been to determine the hypoglycemic effect when administering the ethanolic extract of Annona muricata L. (Guanábana) in diabetic rats. Materials: leaves of Annona muricata L. (Guanábana), were used 36 male youngs Holtzman rats with a weight average (210±10g) received water and food to freedom, with a period of acclimatization of seven days, randomly and divided into six groups (normal, alloxan, control, three doses of the extracts (200, 400 and 600mg/kg) and glibenclamide 5 mg/kg, daily during 5 days; Method: Diabetes was induced in rats by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan monohydrated at dose of 130mg/kg to all the animals except the normal group. After 24 hours the animals that presented blood glucose levels > 250mg/dL were used for the study, the blood glucose levels were determined by using electronic glucometer (Optium) and insulin levels were measured by the method of Sandwich according to Gonzales and et al. Also it was made the histopathologic study of páncreas, liver and kidney. Results: with 200mg/kg of ethanolic extract greater hypoglycemic effect was observed (p is less than 0.05) and better protection of the páncreas, liver and kidney of the damage caused by alloxan according histological studies. The findings possibly justify because the alkaloids could induce insulin secretion (Garcia Lopez et al., 2004); the free flavonoids would act as scavenging of reactive oxygen spieces (Vinson et al.,1985), and the phenolic compounds that would be bound to peroxisomes proliferator receptor (Sesika et al., 2005). Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of leaves of Annona muricata L. (Guanábana) administered by oral route was to greater hypoglycemic effectiveness when using during 5 days in diabetic rats, being the most effective dose of 200mg/kg like hypoglycemic.
