-- The toxicological biochemical impact of lead as environmental pollutants associated with respiratory diseases and oxidative stress was evaluated. Study subjects are women, traffic officers from Lima Downtown whose ages were between 20 and 35, who were evaluated for being exposed to environmental contamination by ≤3 and >3 years working in traffic. For that reason, in order to obtain information about the incidence of respiratory diseases, their medical files were checked and they filled out a survey. Blood lead levels were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy, and the oxidative stress was measured by spectrophotometric methods the cellular antioxidants : Glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glucose – 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and the lipid lipoperoxidation measuring malondialdehyde MDA in plasma. Blood lead average levels were: (4.2 ± 3 μg/dL), in the group that had ≤ 3 years working in traffic, and (6.5 ± 2.5 μg/dL), (p less than 0.05), in the group that had > 3 years working in traffic, although the results were within the levels allowed by the World Health Organization (WHO). MDA and GSH levels, were analyzed by visible spectrophotometry, SOD and G6PDH activities were analyzed by UV spectrophotometry. The results of G6PDH activity were: (2.4 ± 1.2 UG6PDH/gHb), in the group that had ≤ 3 years in traffic vs. (4.1 ± 3.7 UG6PDH/gHb), (p less than 0.05) in the group with > 3 years working in traffic, and there was an important difference between the evaluated groups. The results for the MDA levels were: (2.1 ± 1.1 ηmol/mL), in the group that had ≤ 3 years in traffic vs. (2.5 ± 1.1 ηmol/mL), (p less than 0.05) in the group with > 3 years working in traffic. The results for the GSH levels were: (9.9 ± 1.8 μmol/mL.gHb), in the group that had ≤ 3 years in traffic vs. (9.5 ± 3.1 μmol/mL.gHb), (p less than 0.05) in the group that had > 3 years working in traffic. The results for the SOD were: (5038.1 ± 582.6 USOD/gHb), in the group that had ≤ 3 years in traffic vs. (4825.8 ± 839.9 USOD/gHb), (p less than 0.05) in the group with > 3 years working in traffic.
