-- At present, acute respiratory infection (ARI) is a cause of morbidity and mortality primarily affecting the child population in Latin America. In Peru, pneumonia is the leading cause of death in young children and causes about one third of outpatient visits to pediatric services. A good proportion of these deaths are due to poor management, attributable to the lack of recognition of early signs of pneumonia, consultation with unsuitable providers, or inappropriate treatment recommendations. That is why we came to this research project that was proposed as objective: To determine knowledge and home care offered by mothers of children under 5 years with ARI attending the WCC José Carlos Mariátegui. The purpose was oriented toward implementing health programs more responsive to realities of the people, recovering the value of their beliefs and cultural patterns, neutralizing those that may harm children's health. This paper is a quantitative, application level, descriptive method and cross section. Was used as the interview technique as a survey instrument, which was applied to a sample of 58 mothers, concluding that most mothers know the early symptoms of IRA, but few recognizing the warning signs of what constitutes a risk to seek medical help is not timely, it is a skill that most mothers do proper care against the symptoms of the IRA, but what is even worrying is that some mothers performing a risk generating care for the child and the application of substances menthol, suspension feeding, incorrect doses of antipyretics, greater compliance with nursing educator role during their interaction with the mother of a family could reverse the findings found in this project. -- Keywords: acute respiratory infection, knowledge, care of children in the home.
