-- The present work is a prospective descriptive cross-sectional study (prescription- indication) with the aim of establishing characteristics of use of ceftriaxone and ceftazidime and assessing the prescription with the Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy in Room of Critical Patients in the Emergency Service of the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital – EsSalud in Lima (Perú) during the months of April and May 2005. It assessed 293 histories, of whom 157 patients received antimicrobial therapy, of whom 124 patients received ceftriaxone and ceftazidime which represents 43.32%. Of these 124 cases, the 64.52% corresponds to ceftriaxone and the 35.48% corresponds to ceftazidime, which shows a high use of these antimicrobial coinciding with other studies of the use of antimicrobials. According to the results of this study recommends standardize the treatment of patients with a diagnosis of infection through a pharmacotherapeutic protocol for the different diagnoses of infection and other pathologies with the aim of reducing antimicrobial resistance and the cost of these treatments. The investigations in Emergency are few and it is important to continue and expand the studies so it can develop more specific strategies for our reality.
