The World Health Organization (WHO) considers pressure ulcer as a quality indicator of intensive care units. Since there is no available information about the prevalence of iatrogenic pressure ulcers (UPI) in Peru, this study wishes to increase the knowledge about that health problem. To that goal, it was developed a pilot study to know both the prevalence of IPU and the presence of permanent factors involved in IPU cases as: physiopathologic, medical management and nursing intervention. The design of the study was a cross-sectional study; the study setting was the Intensive Care Unit (UCI) of Clínica Angloamericana. The pilot study was carried out between January and March of 2007. It was revealed 20% pressure ulcer prevalence which 60% was classified as stage 1 lesions. 40% was found on the oral mucosa. The major number of IPU cases was presented in male patients (60%) and patients about 40 and 60 years (60%). Furthermore, some risk factors were identified: inmobility (68%) and pseudo-analgesia states. Nursing intervention against pressure ulcers was effective in 92%. Also, the main cause of admission into the ICU under studied was acute respiratory infections (60%). It was concluded that it is vital to know the prevalence of IPU for making improvements oriented to its prevention and adequate management of its lesions in the intensive care units.
