--- Introduction: The early skin-to-skin contact of newborn with her mother after childbirth has been for centuries a common practice in different cultures as a natural and instinctive form of protection to the newborn. Objective: To describe the quality of early skin to skin contact between the mother and her vigorous full-term newborn treated at the Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal in the month of May 2015. Design: Observational, descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study. Location: Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal. Participants: It was studied 100 mother-child dyads treated at the Obstetric Center of INMP - 2015. Interventions: It was performed non-probability sampling by trial, considering the criteria established in the study. To measure the study variables were used as instruments a questionnaire that was collected by the survey technique. To relate qualitative variables were used the test chi square with a significance of 5%. Results: About the quality of early skin to skin contact was noted that 100.0% presented adequate quality in the immediacy of skin to skin contact, the same for the form of delivery of the newborn and the mother’s breast naked presentation. However, 96.0% of patients had an inadequate quality of the permanence time of the newborn in the breast. Regarding the time of initiation of breastfeeding, 70.0% of newborns were breastfed between 1st and 2nd hour of life, 20.0% began breastfeeding after 2 hours of birth. The attention of the mother was one of the most frequent reasons to end the skin to skin contact (53.0%), followed by the taking of the footprint impressions in crib (34.0%). Conclusions: The quality of early skin to skin contact between mothers and their vigorous full-term newborns treated at the Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal was not adequate, because the time spent in the maternal breast was less than 15 minutes in 96% of patients.
