--- Problem: ¿What are the clinical-epidemiological aspects and surgical management of Appendix mass in pediatric patients of Surgery Service of Health Children National Institute of Peru since January 2004 to December 2008? Design: Observational, descriptive, retrospective. Proceedment: We reviewed clinical histories of all the patients with appendix mass diagnose (K35.1) who were hospitalized at INSN since January 2004 to December 2008 and agree with inclusion and exclusion criteria. We fill down the formulate and then made statistic analysis. Results: The incidence of appendix mass was 28.86%. The average age was nice years old, more frequently between 6 to 10 years. The time of illness previous to the hospitalization was 5 days. We identify appendix mass in the clinical exam in 62.5%. 75.74% had abdominal ultrasonography. We had medical management in 93.2%. The fist antibiotics were amikacin/clindamycin i.v.6 days, and as a second Line management were ceftriaxone/metronidazol. The 15% of patients had bad response to medical treatment. The appendix mass recurrence was 22%, more frequently in the first 2 weeks. The elective laparoscopic appendectomy was performed in 25% after 8 weeks of initial hospitalization. 80% had controls after delivery. Conclusions: The most important sign of appendix mass in the physical exam was to have the mass. The abdominal ultrasonography is the gold standard to diagnose appendix mass. Initial management was conservative medical. The elective laparoscopic appendectomy could have severe complications.
