--- Objectives: To identify the relationship between knowledge and practice on food and nutrition of children under 5 years in participating and nonparticipating mothers in educational sessions (ES), residents in Paucará, Huancavelica-2008. Methods: Descriptive, ethnographic, quanti-qualitative study. In the quantitative phase, the sampling was non probabilistic and it had 48 mothers divided in 2 groups: participating and non participating mothers in educational sessions. We applied an observation form of feeding practices and a test of knowledge about food and nutrition of children under 5 years who asked about complementary feeding, pre-school feeding and hygiene, previously validated by expert opinion and a pilot. It was applied descriptive statistics: to compare the knowledge and practices among both groups of mothers was used the student t test and to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge practices and chi square was used; for correlation of knowledge and practices it was used Pearson. In the qualitative phase, the sample was intentional and using the snowball technique; 2 interviews in-depth were conducted, 1 focus group in each group. For each technique was used a guide asking the reasons for participating mothers in SE were not practicing certain knowledge about food and nutrition and the reasons participants were mothers not considered suitable for practice, it was also used a voice recorder, whose content was de recorded and analyzed, the transcripts were grouped by themes and then coded to develop on major categories in these areas. Results: 88% of mothers had incomplete primary education, 92% spoke Quechua. 62% of participating mothers received in expositions as ES. There was significant difference in the test of knowledge between groups of mothers (p = 1x10-4). All participating mothers were in the intermediate level of knowledge. There was a relationship between knowledge and practices on food and nutrition in the participating to ES mothers (r = 0.7918).
