This study evaluated the effect of the inclusion of sodium butyrate (BS) in the diet on the development of intestinal villi and crypts Lieberkühn in guinea pigs for fattening. 45 male guinea pigs weaned at 14 days of age, distributed in a completely random system of five treatments with nine replicates each were used. The treatments were: (T1) control; (T2) antibiotic; (T3) BS 100 ppm; (T4) and BS 200 ppm (T5) 300 ppm BS. Samples of the three sections of intestine from each animal at 84 days of age were taken and were referred to the development of histological slides for measurements. For the length of intestinal villi, were found in the duodenum than T5 was higher than T1 (p <0.05), while in the jejunum and ileum are no significant differences. For the width of villi in the duodenum and jejunum no statistical differences, while at the level of ileal BS treatments were superior to the control and T2; in turn, shows a greater development T5 T4 and T3 (p <0.05). Crypt depth level Lieberkühn jejunum and ileum are lower for T4 and T5 compared to T1 and T2. For the parameter relationship between the length of villi and depth of crypt, T3, T4 and T5 are superior to the control but not the T2, in sections of the duodenum and jejunum (p <0.05), also T4 and T5 generated higher ratio T2 and T3. With these results the diet supplemented with BS has a positive effect on intestinal morphometry in guinea pigs for fattening are concluded, being obvious improvements in the L / P of the three intestinal segments, based on longer villi and shallower crypts, being this more consistent response to the T5.
