--- Work of design investigation transverse, observational and epidemiological, on a sample of 24 greater adults (_ 60 years) of both sexes, hospitalized in the Geriatric Clinic PNP San José, accomplished in the month of December of the 2002, respectively. The objective of the study was of determining the frequency of the alterations of the internal means presented in these patients, being tried to identifying the most frequent factors of the electrolytic and acid disturbances - base, with the purpose that they could be exercised prevention actions. The obtained results carried us to the following conclusions: Most of the electrolytic disturbances are originated at hospital. The electrolytic alteration more frequent was the hiponatremia (25%), between the hospitalized patients, with predominance of the feminine sex, not being observed severity of this disturbance. The hospitalization time greater than five days and the use of diuretics were associated significantly to the development of hiponatremia. The hipokalemia was other important electrolytic alteration presented during the hospitalization of the patient greater adults (20.85%). The acid disturbance -base more frequent was the alkalosis respiratory (83.35%) and was associated to other alterations in most of the patients. The metabolic acidosis occupies an important presence (33.35%), after the alkalosis respiratory, what would be as consequence of the quality of infusions intravenous lacking of industrious bases customarily.
