-- Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common opportunistic infection in HIV patients in developing countries. Isoniazid is recommended for the prevention the latent TB; however the compliance is a problem. Objective: Identify personal factors associated with compliance of chemoprophylaxis with isoniazid in patients infected with HIV. Methods: a cross-sectional study, using records of patients who received isoniazid in the program to control sexually transmited diseases PROCETSS Hospital Dos de Mayo, from 1 January 2001 to December 31, 2003. Record was identified 480 patients, but only 100 patients were located in a non-random, of both sexes, over 18 years of age who were administered a validated questionnaire. We obtained demographic data, personal, clinical and consumption of alcohol and drugs. The variables were analyzed according to the relationship stored on condition of compliance with the QP. Descriptive analysis was used. To identify factors associated with the same analysis was used univariate and multivariate. Results: Of 480 patients who received INH was located only 100 (21%) patients. The compliance rate in the population was 19%, while those patients located was 40%. Is significant difference between the rate of compliance using the definition of Hospital 19% compared with the WHO definition reaches 53%. Compliance is related to age, was better in patients older than 40 years and the period in which the patient took the QP. The other variables unrelated to compliance. Conclusion, the difference found between the rate of compliance defined by the Hospital and WHO suggests reviewing the operational definition for QP because compliance would be underestimated, and to evaluate the effectiveness of INH prophylaxis. Personal factors unrelated to compliance except for age. It is necessary to improve the mechanisms for recording data, because it was observed that patients who have more information in the record show better compliance. On the other hand it is suggested to investigate institutional factors and implement a continuing education program for patients on the importance of chemoprophylaxis. -- Key words: compliance, chemoprophylaxis, isoniazid, HIV.
