The objective of the present study was to identify congenital infected calves with the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in two herds of intensive production located in the irrigation’s of Santa Rita of Siguas (Herds A) and Vitor (Herds B) of the valley of Arequipa. The BVDV was detected using the test of ELISA of antigen capture. Samples of blood with anticoagulant were obtained of calves of the herd A (n = 36) and B (n = 95) after birth and before they take the calostro. The 0.76% (1/131) with IC minimum 0.24 and maximum 3.5% of the calves samples had a congenital infection or persistently infected (PI) with the BVDV. The calf PI was detected in the herd A, which indicates that the prevalence of animal PI in the group females was of 5.88% (1/17). Any calf PI were detected in the herd B, in spite the bigger number of calves sampled. The results of this study indicate that the animal PI to be in some herds of intensive production in valley of Arequipa and that those calves might be detected at the moment of birth.
