- OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study is to describe the radiological characteristics of nonpalpable breast lesions and determine their relationship to the pathology at the National Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins. METHODOLOGY: The type of study was observational, analytical, retrospective cross-sectional sample whose number was established by the medical records of 159 patients with clinically non-palpable lesions detected by mammography and confirmed by surgical biopsy. A card in the collection that included population characteristics, mammography and pathology of the patients. Subsequently, I create a database on which the analysis performed using the chi-square and Odds Ratio, as appropriate. RESULTS: The number of patients studied was 159 whose average age was 58 + / - 7.9 years. It was found that 93.1% of the cases were BIRADS category 4. 27% of patients were diagnosed with breast cancer. As for the injuries the most frequent side location was the left breast (56%) on the upper outer quadrant (36.5%). The injury was most often was microcalcification in 89.9% of cases, the distribution was more concentrated among lineal and group with 37.1% of cases in each, 50% were amorphous type, 45.5% were number presented in less than 10 cm2. The masses corresponding to 23.9% of cases, the oval shape is the most prevalent that with 34.2% of cases and smaller than 1 cm. with 63.2% of cases. The architectural distortion had a frequency of 15.1%. We found a statistically significant difference for the chi-square between the cases of mass effect and breast cancer (p = 0.17), the association was calculated for these variables with a value of OR = 2.5 CI (<1.2, 5.5 >), indicating that patients with mammographic evidence of mass 2.5 times higher risk of developing breast cancer than those not present. CONCLUSION: Statistically significant differences were found between cases of mass effect and breast cancer was calculated that there is a double major risk of breast cancer in those patients with masses on the mammogram. -- KEY WORD: Nonpalpable breast lesions, mammography, harpoon guided biopsy, breast cancer.
