--- In Perú, it is estimated that more than a third (37%) of the population suffers or has suffered a mental health disorder, it is women who suffer most such disorders compared to men, and that they are in mostly they are occupying the role of caregivers of people with chronic mental health disorder. The objective of this research was to know what the meanings and experiences about how assumed responsibility for the care and what is the impact of this on the welfare and mental health in women-caregivers of relatives with chronic mental illness are residing in urban areas of Lima. For this research method qualitative descriptive exploratory elected because an approximation to the singularity of meanings and experiences in each of the respondents sought. The sample was made by purposive sampling, as inclusion criteria. The results were that personal stories and the family, community and social context there are common elements that influences the way respondents assume responsibility for the care and expressed in stereotypes, ideals and rigid gender roles and oriented hierarchical induce and / or increase the responsibility of the care of the family, this happens in the family, as in the mental health system and society. Welfare and mental health experienced as unattainable ideals in daily life, which shows a hegemonic discourse of these generating discomfort and guilt. Dependence and guilt, both are characteristic symptom of the relationship between the caregiver and the relative. The impact of care on welfare compared with other crisis situations such as the loss of the mother or the couple's estrangement. The responsibility for the care affects the perception of the body, which is represented as a machine that never sick woman without apparently suffering or disease also affects the perception of time itself, that looks like an elusive good for them. The alternatives to these tensions care is the ability to move from dependence relationship of interdependence with relative caregivers, social participation exercise in mental health organizations and beginning to question the idealization of care and mothering this .
