--- The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of systemic administration of Azithromycin associated with scaling and root planing treatment with scaling and root planing only in adult patients with chronic periodontitis. The study included 28 adult patients Patients were randomized into 2 groups, designated by the letters A and B of 14 members each. In each patient made a complete periodontal evaluation before treatment. At the second appointment, was continued with the completion of scaling and root planing, and optimizing hygiene techniques. Patients in group A were indicated antibiotic treatment with azithromycin 500 mg (Zitax) orally every 24 hours for 3 days and group B were not indicated any additional therapy. All patients were cited four times. The appointments were scheduled as follows: third date (after 14 days), fourth round (at 30 days), fifth round (at 90 days) and sixth round (after 180 days). They were assessed again periodontal probing depth and clinical attachment level, and recorded data from the periodontal chart. According to the Student t test and comparison of the effectiveness of treatment was performed by analysis of variance. An A level of significance for values of p <0.05. For all evaluations, probing depth and clinical attachment level of statistically significant differences between the groups evaluated. The group that received conventional periodontal therapy more Azithromycin obtained a favorable clinical response than the control group in terms of probing depth and clinical attachment level. The differences in clinical response to treatment were higher in the first months post-treatment assessment, however until the last assessment and outcome measures were higher for the group that use azithromycin. Azithromycin use as adjunct therapy to periodontal treatment proved superior to conventional therapy for patients with chronic periodontitis.
