-- The aim of this study was to determine whether caries removal using the chemo – mechanical method (papain gel and spoon) produces lower anxiety levels than the conventional method (handpiece and spoon) in children. The time during the caries removal was considered like possible anxiety factor. 40 patients between 6 and 8 years old were selected with following characteristics: slight to moderate trait anxiety, without previous experience to the use of rotatory instruments, cavitated lesions in one of their deciduous molars that was accessible to hand instruments of the chemo –mechanical method, in addition to being active, deep and without pulp exposure. The sample was assigned in two groups: 20 children, who were treated with chemo – mechanical method (experimental group) and the other 20, with the conventional method (control group). The anxiety levels were measured before, during and after the caries removal using a psychological instrument, Facial Image Scale (FIS). The results showed the experimental group displayed lower anxiety level than the control group during caries removal being this significant statically difference (p =.009). The average time during caries removal with chemo – mechanical method (858.20 s ± 119,176) were greater significant (p=.00) than the conventional method (533.85 s. ± 225.004).
