Many studies show the high prevalence of dental caries in our population, even since early ages. The only way to fight it is by preventing it through a risk approach. The aim of this study was to determine the caries risk among a population of children between 6 and 36 months old, both healthy and with systemic conditions, which attended for first time to the dentist at the Baby Clinic of the HCFAP within a period of three months. First, the mothers of the children were asked about specific caries risk factors such as breast feeding or use of nursing bottle during the night, frequency of sugar consumption in a day, transmission habits and oral hygiene habits. Then, the children were examined in order to determine the presence of congenital dental defects. 66,7% of the children presented moderate caries risk ; 16,7%, low caries risk; and 16,7%, high caries risk. For both healthy children and children with systemic condictions, the moderate caries risk prevailed with 68% and 64% respectively. The present study provides information to create specific educational and preventive programs which allow to decrease the caries risk among our population.
