-- This research is framed within the educational field, and encompasses the application of reading workshops whose aim is to increase reading comprehension in the students in the academic cycle I, Department of Obstetrics, Archbishop Loayza Private University. It is an experimental type of study and based on the number of variables, bivariate: independent variable, reading techniques and the dependent variable, reading comprehension. The research is longitudinal throughout the period of application of the variable. The sample population consisted of 25 female, morning shift students of academic cycle I of the Faculty of Obstetrics at the Archbishop Loayza Private University; between 17 and 25 years of age for the experimental group (A) and 25 for the control group (B). The research design is quasi-experimental with control and experimental groups using pre and post tests. Five instruments of measurement were designed for data collection: a reading comprehension pretest, a reading comprehension process test, a reading comprehension post-test, the attitudinal metacognition Likert scale and a checklist of reading skills, the latter of which was classified under complex and basic. All instruments comply with the qualities of validity and reliability. The study discusses the following research hypothesis: there are similar conditions between the experimental and control group in the pretest; and differences in the post-test with respect to the comprehension level after the application of the reading skills workshop to the experimental group of students in the Academic Cycle I of the Faculty of Obstetrics, Archbishop Loayza Private University. It should be noted that the research has reached the following conclusion: there is a significant difference in the post-test between the experimental and control groups regarding the level of reading comprehension after the application of the reading skills workshop. The results obtained allow one to reject the null hypothesis and accept the research hypothesis, since a P value equal to 0.000 (<0.05) has been found after application of the reading skills workshop, which is why one can say that statistical evidence indicates significant differences between the results obtained before and after the period of application of the reading skills workshops. One may therefore conclude that the experimental group average has risen significantly from the pre to the post test.
