This paper studies pluvial floods in department of Tumbes in Peru. In this area there have been large losses of both economic and human lives due to recent floods. Therefore, there is a great importance in study of this natural hazard with purpose of overturn or minimize losses. The objective of research is to identify critical points in flood zones in cities of Pueblo Nuevo and Tumbes, as well as to propose an alternative solution. To accomplish these objectives, the following steps were followed. First, topographic, geographic, rainfall records from different years, vegetation cover and land use maps were collected. Then, DEM file was processed, through ArcGis software, to obtain delimited watershed and, thus, geomorphological parameters were determined. Subsequently, a hydrological analysis was applied to the rainfall records. In addition, using vegetation cover and land use maps, the watershed curve number was calculated. With the results of the third phase, the maximum flow for a return period of 100 years was calculated using the HecHms software. Finally, 2D hydrodynamic modeling was constructed via Iber software. As a result, flood critical points in area of interest were identified. Likewise, construction of a structure to protect both cities from overflow of Tumbes’s River was proposed.
