This work demonstrates an improvement in the maintenance management of a company that provides services to mining companies. To do this, once the problem was diagnosed, it was decided to use the RCM tools, which directly attacked the root causes and it made possible to improve the availability of two Caterpillar model 966L front loaders. Both machines initially presented an average availability of 73% and the cost that reflected this low index amounted to more than 833 thousand soles. The identified problem showed three main reasons that generated the values: the high level of hours of unscheduled repairs, the low level of maintainability and the high level of planned corrective maintenance. Given this, the use of condition-based maintenance was proposed, as well as FMEA and preventive maintenance, all of them supported by RCM, which together allowed the company to achieve a world-class desired value equivalent to 90%. As results, the maintainability and planned shutdown indicators also recorded improvements in their performance, showing increases of 1.4% and 48% respectively. Finally, it is concluded that the RCM tools proved to be an optimal solution to the problem of low availability, since the maintenance indicators managed to achieve the desired goals.
