The spread of medical research and the acceptance of the English language as lingua franca in the scientific community have created significant barriers for Spanish-speaking professionals who seek updated information. Therefore, medical translation has secured its place as one of the most lucrative specialties, featuring inconsistent and specialized terminology, as well as linguistic and cultural challenges. However, healthcare professionals often turn to machine translation (MT) engines without seeking professional post-editing (PE) services, which can undermine the veracity and accuracy of a text, given that MT exhibits morphosyntactic and linguistic limitations. Thus, this study aims to identify the type of translation issues and errors of the MT engine Google Translate (GT) in two medical articles on Borderline Personality Disorder in order to analyze the post-editing process at a lexical-grammatical, syntactic, terminological, and phraseological level. This study begins with the premise that a pre-translation text analysis and pre-editing of the source text (ST) should be performed to ensure smoother MT results. This process will allow for the subsequent focus on the most critical issues in GT's results at a terminological, stylistic, morphosyntactic, lexical, and typographical level during post-editing. Finally, a contrastive analysis between the ST, MT output, and PE corrections will be conducted to examine the translational decisions made regarding the terminological and phraseological aspects of the medical research articles.
