The main problem that is occurring in Lima, Peru, is the traffic congestion that is reflected in streets and avenues at peak hours during the day. This problem is particularly relevant at the intersection of Caminos del Inca and Benavides avenues in the district of Surco, where the increased traffic flow causes major problems for users such as long queues of vehicles, poor service levels and delays in crossing the intersection. This research work proposes the implementation of an optimized traffic light cycle with the main objective of reducing delays, queue lengths and travel times. In order to do this, both vehicular and pedestrian intersection gauging was carried out to know the reality of the problem. By means of microsimulation with the help of VISSIM software, it was possible to create a calibrated and validated model that represents the current state of the intersection under study. With the help of the Webster method, it was possible to calculate the range of seconds from 111 to 222 seconds, where the optimal traffic signal cycle is located, and to achieve this, 6 scenarios were proposed within this range. According to the results obtained from the VISSIM software after simulating the proposed scenarios, the most relevant improvement was obtained in scenario 6 of 112 seconds, where the reduction of queue lengths on Caminos del Inca Avenue, from south to north there was an improvement of 44%, while in the access from north to south there was an improvement of 53% and with respect to the delays obtained, on average there were improvements of 21%. These results show that by changing the current traffic light cycle from 160 seconds to a shorter one of 112 seconds, a more fluid and efficient traffic flow is achieved for all users of the intersection.
