This research analyzes the influence of quartz powder as a partial substitute for fine aggregate to improve the mechanical properties of concrete. To demonstrate this, we worked with experimental data for the different design with different percentages of quartz powder (30%, 50%, 100%). The characterization of the quartz powder was carried out through granulometric analysis. Likewise, 8 tests were carried out for each hardened concrete design (base and 30%, 50% and 100%) in which the compressive strength and durability were evaluated using test specimens, on the other hand; The fresh concrete was also analyzed obtaining results of unit weight, slump and air content. Based on the granulometric characterization, the ASTM C-136 standard provides us with certain parameters that our aggregate must meet to guarantee good concrete resistance. It can be stated that the combinations of 30%70% and 50%50% of quartz and fine aggregate respectively, guarantee good granulometry; because the size distribution of its particles is within what is required by said standard, thus obtaining a well-graded curve. Regarding the w/c ratio of 0.5, the combinations of 30% 70% and 50% 50% quartz and fine aggregate respectively, comply with the air content required by the ASTM C-231 standard, since these do not exceed the maximum which guarantees an adequate percentage of voids. On the other hand, the initial slump guarantees a fluid concrete and through visual inspection it was possible to conclude that the mixture was pasty and did not present exudation. Finally, we can affirm that the combination of quartz in concrete helped increase the compressive strength by 125% with an addition of 30% quartz.
