This study aims to confirm whether teaching mathematics from the perspective of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) contributes to first-grade students' quantitative reasoning. Realistic mathematics is defined as teaching that involves everyday life situations, and quantitative reasoning is considered the ability to understand relationships between quantities to reach new information. In these operations, complexity arises not from arithmetic or solving operations but from the choice of them. An experimental study was conducted where 79 children with an average age of 86.5 months (SD = 3.7) participated in pre- and post-tests to measure their quantitative reasoning performance. After the pre-test, they were randomly divided into two groups: 43 in the control group and 36 in the intervention group. The intervention group participated in four 20-minute sessions of RME, conducted in small groups of 5-6 children, after the pre-test and before the post-test. They were presented with realistic situations in which children discussed mathematical solutions in groups. At the time of the pre-test, the results of both groups were compared, showing no significant difference between them (F (1,76) = .412, p=.523). However, following the intervention, a significant difference was found between the two groups when comparing their results, controlling for prior knowledge in quantitative reasoning (F (1, 75) = 105.93, p <.001), favoring the intervention group. Based on these results, it is concluded that the RME approach positively contributes to the development of quantitative reasoning in children. These results are important, as quantitative reasoning favors mathematical performance over the years, suggesting the early implementation of this approach in teaching practice.
