In 2017, INPE promoted the “Jail Industry Program“ to provide, regulate and strengthen prison work and encourage the participation of inmates in various productive activities and reduce the rate of idleness. This program allows them to generate their own income, cover their personal and family expenses, pay their civil reparations and pay for workshop expenses. The challenge of our research was to propose possible solutions to the lack of opportunities for inmates to engage in productive activities during their period of incarceration that would facilitate their reintegration into society. While it is true that prisons are conceived as centers of confinement and punishment, our research proposes a different vision of how prison treatment programs (social and psychological assistance, health, education and work) allow inmates to acquire good habits and discipline as part of their resocialization process. In our study, we analyzed the management of prison treatment programs in other countries, as well as the “Productive Prisons“ program, in order to propose strategies that contribute to the solution of the identified problem. To this end, we made visits to the Lurigancho prison and conducted interviews with entrepreneurial inmates, INPE workers and entrepreneurs currently participating in the program. In summary, we understood how the program impacts the emotional and economic tranquility of the inmates and their families, we learned about their human side, their desire to improve and we understood that we all deserve a second chance to change and rebuild our lives.
