The research study “Hydroeconomic modeling incorporating precipitation and temperature variability with the support of specialized tools to improve the use of water resources in the Vilcanota river basin had the following objectives: (i) Analyze the baseline water information in the population, agricultural, livestock, energy, industrial and economic sectors in the upper Vilcanota river basin, (ii) Determine water demand and supply in the upper Vilcanota river basin using specialized tools, (iii) Present and analyze the results of the hydroeconomic model based on specialized technical information, (iv) Prepare guidelines for improving water resource management based on the hydroeconomic model in the upper Vilcanota river basin. The methodology used for the development of the hydrological model was the use of the SNIRH-ANA platform and the WEAP software was used for the hydroeconomic modeling. The results of the hydroeconomic model were subjected to four (4) climatic scenarios with decreases and increases in precipitation and temperature. The results show an average supply of 7078.6 m3/s and an average demand of 3065 m3/s for all uses; however, between the months of May and August the demand exceeds the supply. The hydroeconomic model based on the interaction between supply and demand shows that the water supply capacity (supply) to the water requirements of the use sectors (demand) in the current conditions of precipitation and temperature in the upper Vilcanota river basin is 100%; however, this is only possible if water is stored in the months of higher low water levels to cope with the months where demand exceeds supply, the model estimates 24.54 soles as the average cost of water per cubic meter. The results of the hydroeconomic model under the influence of climate scenarios show that the first scenario with reduced rainfall would have the effect of reducing the water supply by 50% with a flow of 3539.3 m3/s; the second climate scenario with excess rainfall would increase the water supply by 50% with a flow of 10617.9 m3/s, making it possible to store water for critical periods; the third scenario with a decrease in temperature and the fourth with an increase in temperature would generate negative effects for agricultural production activities due to the presence of very cold nights with frosts; and in the fourth scenario, the effect would be an increase in plant wilting and an increase in the demand for water.
