The study examined the relationship between economic dependence and intimate partner violence among Peruvian women during the COVID-19 pandemic, using data from the 2020 Encuesta Nacional Demográfica y de Salud Familiar (ENDES). A total of 10,225 cases of Peruvian women of childbearing age with current partners were analyzed. Contrary to expectations, an inverse association between economic dependence and intimate partner violence was found, challenging the traditional notion that economically dependent women are more likely to experience violence. Other findings included a higher likelihood of violence among younger women and those cohabiting with their partners. Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between violence and variables such as age, marital status, and educational level. However, study limitations include measurement bias and potential social desirability bias in self-reports. Despite these limitations, the study provides relevant insights into the dynamics of intimate partner violence in the context of the pandemic in Peru, highlighting the complexity of factors influencing this phenomenon and emphasizing the need for comprehensive approaches in its understanding and prevention.
