The purpose of this study is to analyze the gender stereotypes present in the journalistic practice of reporters and hosts of the morning and central editions of ATV Noticias in 2020. Gender stereotypes define the role of a person according to their gender, thus determining the expectations and objectives of men and women (Moya, 2003). It is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The sample is made up of 100 daily broadcasts of the ATV Noticias news program in its morning and central editions, for this three moments of the year have been taken: the months of January, March and November 2020. The analysis is carried out with the content analysis technique of the daily broadcasts of the morning and central news programs of the ATV Noticias program and which covered the indicated study period. The month of January was chosen to be the period before the COVID-19 pandemic; The month of March coincided with the beginning of the pandemic and greater television exposure of journalists, and the month of November corresponded with the situation of political crisis due to the presidential vacancy of Martín Vizcarra. Afterwards, from the analysis of the data, certain gender stereotypes have been detected in the two ATV Noticias editions, specifically, marked stereotypes are observed in the participation and coverage of news between anchors and reporters. On the one hand, the hosts only comment on local, police and political issues, in the latter they have acquired a recent participation that is related to the beauty of the presenters, a fundamental tool to increase the rating on certain topics that may not be so attractive to the viewer target audience of the newscast. Regarding physical appearance, excessive and unequal attention is paid to this aspect, evidencing well-defined gender stereotypes such as drivers with white skin, a thin build and brown or blonde hair, essential attributes for them to perform in that role. While female reporters, with dark skin, a robust build and brown or black hair, must always look presentable and attractive in front of cameras. Regarding personal image, it reflects a social norm related to feminine appearance in the journalistic field, where both hosts and reporters tend to use makeup, hairstyles, accessories and manicured nails as part of a daily aesthetic production mandatory to comply with her work on television successfully, which reveals an appreciation of women for their physical beauty rather than for their skills and cognitive abilities during their journalistic performance. These findings show that gender stereotypes still persist in female journalistic work in the television context, since the role of women tends to be represented in a decorative way and associated with relationships of dependency, creating barriers to their professional development and limiting their ability to perform on equal terms with their male colleagues.
