Objective: To determine the factors associated with temporomandibular dysfunctions (TMD) in athletes belonging to their university team sports team at two private universities in Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: Analytical cross-sectional study. A total of 203 university athletes aged 18 years and older, who met the selection criteria, were surveyed in this research work. For the evaluation of TMD, the Fonseca Anamnestic Index was applied. Likewise, possible factors associated with the presence of TMD were included, such as university faculty, university year, type of sport, use of mouth guard, hours of training per week, hours of sleep per day, level of anxiety and stress, and daily consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine. For the crude and adjusted association of the variables, a Poisson regression with robust variance was used; with a 95% confidence interval and a p value <0.05. Results: 67.49% of university athletes belonging to the sample presented TMD. An association of the presence of TMD was evidenced, in an adjusted multivariate analysis, with the variables: use of mouthguard (95% CI: 0.28 - 0.93), moderate anxiety (95% CI: 1.06 - 1.96) and daily cigarette consumption ( 95% CI: 1.07 - 1.66). Conclusion: The factors associated with TMD in athletes belonging to their university team were: use of mouthguard (with a tendency to be a protective factor), moderate anxiety and daily cigarette consumption.
