The climate of the Loreto region, where the project is being developed, is extremely hot, humid and has very heavy rains. These factors significantly affect the durability of the asphalt cement, and therefore, of the asphalt concrete that makes up the pavement, to such an extent that they promote accelerations in the oxidation process, impacting the binder, in the premature appearance of surface deterioration such as peeling, cracking and detachments, and even reaching mechanistic problems, which compromise the expected resilient behavior, due to the changes that occur in the viscoelasticity of the asphalt binder. In the case of the present research, the topic focuses on determining in a technological and innovative way the selection of the asphalt cement that will result in an asphalt concrete that will work efficiently under the critical conditions of climate and traffic foreseen for the operation of the road under study. The integral road project is challenging, given the critical conditions it will need to pass through in the Amazonian mantle, ultimately linking Peru with Colombia. The project refers to the Bellavista - Mazán - Salvador - El Estrecho highway, in this research in particular in section I: Nanay Bridge, viaducts and accesses. Currently in Peru, the choice of asphalt binders in the construction of pavements is based on the degree of penetration, viscosity and softening point. This traditional way of characterizing binders is being rejected in developed countries such as the USA, the European front, Asia and other countries, since these parameters don´t consider the impact of vehicle traffic or the critical temperatures to which the road will be subjected and which damage the asphalt, having no correlation with the performance and useful life of the pavement. More advanced technologies develop hot mix asphalt designs (HMA) under the criteria of the SHRP (Strategic Highway Reseach Program), corresponding to the Superpave Standard, which, among others, classify asphalt binders according to the so-called Performance Grade (PG): Performance Grade (PG) or Performance Grade, which take into account the climatic circumstances and classes of traffic solicitation expected for the road, incorporating a series of modern mathematical models that correlate the maximum as well as minimum temperatures of the climate of the place with the operating temperature of the asphalt and the asphalt binder, finally granting a technical recommendation of the binder to be used. This innovative approach also incorporates in a complementary manner the effect of traffic intensity in terms of volume and frequency of impact on the asphalt concrete. Once the first objective of selecting the binder by PG is completed, we proceed with the no less important objective of the research, which refers to designing the HMA that will work efficiently and specially designed for the climate and traffic conditions of the project. Once the mathematical models for the calculation of the PG are developed, the use of polymer-modified asphalts is recommended, a condition that is then integrated into the design of the theoretical laboratory asphalt mix, to finally test it for performance in the parameter of resistance to permanent deformation, critical condition that is evaluated in this research and that gives as effect that the asphalt mixture with polymers, as well as designed, proceeds to attend the specific conditions of climate and traffic foreseen for this road section of the Nanay Bridge, viaducts and accesses in the Loreto region.
