Backgrounds: Emotional dependence affects how a young person develops in their interpersonal relationships, promoting their vulnerability to the adversities that may arise, preventing them from knowing how to use coping strategies appropriately. However, there is a lack of evidence that determines the relationship between both variables. Objective: To determine the relationship between emotional dependence and coping strategies in young people with and without divorced parents belonging to a private university in Metropolitan Lima. Methods: The sample consisted of 189 young university students, men, and women between 18 and 25 years of age living in Metropolitan Lima. Instruments were used to collect information, such as a sociodemographic form, the Emotional Dependence Inventory (EDI) and the Adolescent Coping Scale, abbreviated version. Results: The results show that there is a significant relationship between (p<.05) the dimensions of Emotional Dependence and Coping Strategies of the following factors: Self-blame (F2), Avoidance through diversion (4), Emotional discharge and somatization (F8) and No action (F11). Conclusions: Emotional dependence and coping strategies do not have a significant relationship depending on the marital status of their parents, but rather, the conditions may arise due to the way in which the separation from their parents developed.
