Nowadays, environmental pollution and its consequences are the topics that cause the greatest concern throughout the world among leaders, economists, and international institutions. The continuity of society and the economic system are threatened by the possibility of not having enough resources to maintain the assets in the coming decades. Different empirical investigations show that there is a bidirectional relationship between environmental wear and economic growth. Thus, it is proven that pollution increases in proportion to economic development, due to the use of fossil fuels, the overexploitation of resources and the waste generated by society's consumption. The Ecological Economy is presented as a new ideology to replace the current model and generate the environmental change that the planet needs. To give further explanation, the topic of contamination is developed, deepening the most relevant existing problems and the proposals for improvements. On the topic of achieving sustainable economic development based on the ecological economy, two contradictory positions were found. A group of authors affirmed the viability of the current economic model with sustainable improvements in favor of continuing economic development. On the other hand, it is stated that it is necessary to decrease economic projections in order to reduce environmental damage worldwide. The research concludes that, in order to migrate to an ecological economy as a model of sustainable growth, structural changes are required, which currently neither society nor states are willing to make. However, the strategy is to maintain the current economic model and optimize its processes and resources, in order to grow economically with the least impact on the ecosystem.
